Douglas joined the Army in 1961. Serving honorably, he was a member of the elite 101st Airborne Division. He was also a distinguished Army Ranger. After the military Douglas settled in the Nashville, TN area where he was a successful realtor for a number of years. After this he worked for the state of Tennessee some ten years. Retiring from this position, he moved to the Smoky Mountain area which he had fallen in love with as a young man.
Douglas was a fan of Elvis music, John Wayne movies and Westerns. An outstanding athlete as a young man, the Army once timed him in the mile at four minutes and one second. While playing high school baseball, he once hit a ball off the left field fence so hard that the shortstop played the ball, not the outfielders.
